Ipsilantes, Alexandros (1792–1828). The family moved to Russia in 1805 & Alexandros served very successfully with the Imperial Army becoming a Major General in the Hussars at the age of 25. He was elected as leader of the Filiki Eteria when Kolokotronis turned down the post, & as such led Greek/Russian troops into Greece in 1821. He was defeated by 10,000 Ottoman troops & fled to Austria where he was imprisoned until just before his death in 1828.
