IPSILANTES, Dimitrios (1793–1832). Like his elder brother he served in the Russian Army until turning to Greece. Appointed by his brother as military commander of the Morea in 1821, & appointed the first of the English Philhellenes, Thomas Gordon, as his Chief of Staff. Dimitrios briefly lead the Greek legislative assembly in 1822/23, & in 1828 was appointed by Kapodistrias as Commander of Eastern Greece. His notable military successes were the defence of Castro Larissa, & his defeat of the Turks at the Battle of Petra in 1829.
